THE MAIDS is a choreodramatic adaptation of Jean Genet’s absurdist drama about two sisters, Claire and Solange, who work as maids and stage an ever-evolving game of authority and obedience. What begins as make-believe turns into a bizarre ballet of submissiveness, immoral madness and revolt against Madame, the woman who employs and dominates them.
Understanding dance as one of humanity’s earliest ritual forms, Genet’s funny, exaggerated syntax is translated into classical ballet, contemporary floorwork, and music moving between Baroque material and hard club techno. Rather than offering a simple feminist uplift, the piece exposes the internalisation of patriarchal logic and warns against the danger of women merely ascending into familiar roles of domination within capitalist and patriarchal structures.
