SPOONFACE STEINBERG is a very moving monologue from the perspective of a autistic girl who is dying of cancer, exploring themes of love, faith, and the meaning of life through her unique, direct, and often humorous observations about the world. The text of the play is characterized by children’s speech patterns and unconventional sentence structures, which serve to break down communication barriers and invite the audience into the inner world of the autistic girl. By the explicit choice of the author, the play features brilliantly composed arias performed by the opera diva Maria Callas, which relate to the heroines whom the protagonist admires:
Casta diva, Norma, V. Bellini
Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix, Samson i Dalila, C. Saint-Saëns
Teneste la promessa, La Traviata, G. Verdi
Addio del passato, La Traviata, G. Verdi
Ebben! Ne andrò lontana, La Wally, A. Catalani
O mio babbino caro, Gianni Schicchi, G. Puccini
Voi lo sapete, o mamma, Cavalleria Rusticana, P. Mascagni
Vissi d’arte, Tosca, G. Puccini
„And if I could ever grow up, I would be one of them sad singers – and sing the dying, and everybody would clap and cheer, because even though the beautiful singing is sad – it is still happy in a way -, and I would sing the dying and people would love me – and out come the angels to take me away, – and I would sing the dying and there would be a lovely piece of beauty in the world – and I would be as free as a little bird floating up to heaven”.
The production was made possible through our own funds and donations.
We would like to thank Mr. Damir Kontak and Mr. Ivo Usmiani for their support, Professor Danko Friščić for the painting, the cast and crew for their enthusiasm, and all our friends for their help in every way.
